The Rahway boys cross country team had already achieved quite a bit even by qualifying for the NJSIAA Group 3 State Championships, only the second time in school history this had been achieved. But better things were yet to come.
Coach Leon Bunion reported that the team had "a phenomenal performance" at the meet. "Entering as the 11th seed," he said, "the team of Micah Lawson, Austin Essel, Damani Brown, Thomas Rosky, Jordan Williams, and Jaydan Nguyen put together their best performance of the season finishing 6th place."
The team's performance easily broke the school's team course record average. It was also its best finish in school history.
Junior Micah Lawson, the only underclassman in the top 10, led the team with a 10th place finish, becoming the first male in school history to qualify for the NJSIAA Meet of Champions.
When asked what it felt like to qualify for the Meet of Champions, Lawson said, ""It feels amazing because this has been a goal of mine since the start of the season. It means a lot because I'm able to continue the tradition. I hope that my achievement will inspire Rahway athletes in the future, giving them confidence that they can achieve their goals even if it seems impossible or unlikely."
The Meet of Champions takes place this Saturday, November 20, at Holmdel Park in Holmdel. Best of luck to Micah and the entire team as they head into the weekend.
