Rahway High School Students Participate in Kean University MLK Day of Service Conference

Students from Rahway High School recently participated in the Kean University MLK Day of Service Conference, joining peers from across the region for a powerful day centered on civic engagement, public service, and the enduring legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Representing Rahway High School, students from the Multi-Ethnic Cultural Club (MECC) and the Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) Program came together to learn, reflect, and grow as student leaders committed to service and active citizenship. The conference was presented through a collaborative partnership with Kean University’s Human Rights Institute, the MLK Commission, Engage NJ, and AmeriCorps, emphasizing the importance of community involvement and social responsibility.

A highlight of the day was an engaging panel discussion featuring:

Rowena Madden, Executive Director, New Jersey Commission on National and Community Service

Ayisha Mapp, Managing Assistant Director of Special Projects at Kean University and Executive Director of Plainfield NOW

Dr. Aaron Smith, Professor of African American Studies at Temple University, widely known as The Rapping Professor

Following the panel, students took part in interactive Q&A sessions and small-group discussions led by Human Rights Institute student leaders. Additional conversations focused on college access, financial aid, academic programs, and leadership pathways. Students also explored university resources and participated in reflective activities centered on how they can apply the lessons learned to their school and the Rahway community.
