Rrrr Maties! There are Lots to Discover at Grover Cleveland

The Staff at Cleveland School struck gold on the morning of Wednesday, March 30th. A cast of teachers spanning multiple grade levels and disciplines came together on their own to perform a mini-play for students in pre-K to third grade. Before we talk about the performance, let me give you some background on how the Pirate Play came to be!

March at Grover Cleveland has always been known as "March Reading Madness." As part of the month-long celebration Mrs. Geis, the Library Media Specialist, organized a list of guest readers ranging from the Mayor of Rahway, Superintendent of Rahway Public Schools, members of the Police and Fire Department, and a host of District School Administrators who all descended upon Grover Cleveland to read to the students. Mrs. Geis had the great idea to round up her colleagues to perform for the students to close out the month of March.

Ahoy maties! The star-studded cast of teachers opened up by reading the children's book "How I Became a Pirate." The fun-witted story takes place in North Beach, where Young Jeremy is captivated by life as a pirate. The fun and jokes quickly end when Young Jeremy soon discovers that there are no good night kisses on board the pirate ship. Cap'n Braid Beard makes it clear that "Pirates don't tuck." Without completely giving away the storyline, Young Jeremy makes the wise decision to live out his

adventures on land through his books. After all, "Pirates don't read books either."

Grover Cleveland students were in complete awe as they watched their teachers act out the famous children's book. The backdrop with palm trees and blue skies set the stage for the beachy Pirate theme. The Cleveland staff's costumes and attire added to the tropical vibe. The student's laughter and cheer made the teacher's efforts worth it.

The staff at Cleveland School are certainly treasures for making an effort to bring a story to life. We hope their efforts continue to fuel students' passion for reading.

    Dear Parents and Guardians,

There are two ways to give, online or you can send in money with your child. We have always raised a great amount of money for this cause, and I am sure we will continue our tradition of giving.

    Thank you in advance,

    Dear Parent,

Pandemic EBT (P-EBT) helps families buy groceries when students are learning remotely because of COVID.

Students approved to receive free or reduced-price school meals may qualify for P-EBT. We encourage parents to complete a school meals application at www.rahway.net, if you have not already done so. If your child is already approved, please, check your Powerschool parent portal to make sure your child’s address and birthdate are correct.

You may be eligible for this assistance even if your school is providing meals during remote learning. Accepting this aid will not hurt a family’s immigration status. The funds will be issued in the coming months and will be provided on a card you can use to buy food at grocery stores and other retail stores. Visit njsnap.gov for the most current information.

    Dear Parents and Families:

Did you know? Reading just 20 minutes a day exposes your child to about 1.8 million words per year. Reading helps students develop a stronger vocabulary, and in addition, students who read for pleasure average higher grades in English, mathematics, science, and history!

Encourage your child to read books!
