Rahway 7th and 8th Grade Academy String Orchestra

    Director: Anthony Perez

The Academy String Orchestra is intended to be a continuation of musical skills developed in the elementary school’s string program. However, through beginner string orchestra and music lessons, accommodations are made to introduce students to a string instrument. Pupils will develop their skills and knowledge so that they can transition into regular orchestra and beyond. Lessons are crafted with consideration of each individual student’s musical experience. Pupils work on techniques used to produce different sounds on an orchestral string instrument (violin, viola, cello or bass). String instruments have a long and rich tradition in many musical styles and genres. Students will explore the rhythmic, melodic and harmonic components of a variety of compositions. Connections are made between these components and the historical and cultural relevance of select performance pieces. The goal of our orchestra is for each student to grow individually and to form meaningful relationships by working as a group. Pupils will learn to self reflect on their skills and accomplishments while collectively working with fellow classmates towards a common goal. The culmination of the student’s work is displayed in their performance practice.

Instrument Lessons – Students involved in String Orchestra at Rahway Academy receive one lesson per week.  The lesson will focus on all the elements used in their performance practice.  These lessons will rotate through six periods on a weekly basis.

Combined 7th and 8th Grade String Orchestra – Students in this ensemble will develop instrument technique, music theory, music notation reading, ear training and performance practice. This ensemble is open to all 7th and 8th grade students at Rahway Academy with teacher’s approval.

Beginner String Orchestra – Students are introduced to the family of string instruments played in our orchestra. A collective effort is made by the student, family and teacher to select an instrument for the pupil to study. Technique, music theory, ear training, music notation reading and performance practice is introduced and explored. This ensemble is open to all 7th and 8th grade students at Rahway Academy.

Chamber String Ensemble – Students in this ensemble will perform a variety of music primarily focused on advanced repertoire. This ensemble is in addition to their participation in regular orchestra. This group is open to all 7th and 8th grade students at Rahway Academy by audition.
