Positive Behavior Support In Schools

The Rahway Middle School kicked off the school wide PBSIS initiative on Tuesday,September 11th. To introduce this initiative to the school, students attended grade level assemblies where the purpose of the program was explained. Mr. Frank Buglione, Superintendent of Schools welcomed students and expressed his support for the program. Other community members in attendance were: Shirley Palmer, President of the NAACP,Local Chapter; Dave Brown, city Councilman; Lily Henderson and Bernie Robson, members of the Rahway Board of Education; Pat Devero, Municipal Alliance representative; and Tim Williams, representative from Elizabethtown Gas.

As part of the initiative, school wide behavioral expectations were outlined. Students learned that a school wide recognition system was established to acknowledge positive social behaviors. Students who are “caught” exhibiting positive behavior will receive tickets. These students will deposit their tickets in grade level bins located in the lunch room. Each week, two winners from each grade level will be announced. At the end of the month, all tickets will be placed in a universal bin where one school wide winner will be chosen.

Following the assembly, classroom teachers defined and taught acceptable school wide expectations and routines.

The goal of the Positive Behavior Support in Schools (PBSIS) is to create positive learning environments using current research and validated practices in positive behavior support. This program encourages and supports pro-social student behavior at the school wide, classroom, and individual student levels.

Team members include: Carrie Almario, Jennifer Cirillo, Alice De Santo-Fontana, Amy Evers, Susan Garretson, Stephanie Holobinko, Philip Morvitz, John Perillo, Zaida Santos, Heather Wetzel and Camille White-Harrell.
