The ancient game of chess, known as the game of kings, has captivated players for hundreds of years. It's one of the most well-known games of the world, spread throughout the Middle East, Asia, Europe and North America. Many people think chess is complicated, but it's no more difficult to learn than many card games. The object in chess is to checkmate your opponent's king. Checkmate, or just "mate" occurs when a king is attacked and the king cannot escape capture on the next move. Chess is played on a board with 64 squares set up in the following way:
