Ten Tips for Reading Aloud

1. Read to your child...no one is ever too old or too young...even infants love hearing the sound of someone reading to them!

2. Read every day...it's a wonderful way to share time with your child.

3. Make reading fun...use silly voices, and be animated as you read. Children love that! (Adults love it, too!)

4. Feel free to improvise...don't be afraid to change the words of the story a bit...have some fun!

5. Talk about the story as you read, and let your child ask you questions as well.

6. Don't worry about re-reading the same book occasionally. Children love hearing familiar, favorite stories (just as they love hearing a favorite song on the radio)

7. Don't rush into reading...get comfortable, snuggle on the couch, and enjoy!

8. Don't stop reading aloud. Even if you child can already read, they can still learn from listening to more complex stories.

9. Have lots of books available...go the the library, look in used book stores, flea markets and garage sales, or swap with friends.

10. Set a good example...let you child see you read (newspaper, magazine, books)
