THANKSGIVING PLAY AND FEAST

Students from Mrs. Klein’s fourth grade class at Madison School in Rahway rehearse for their annual Thanksgiving Play, which will be presented on Friday, November 21 at 12:00pm. in the school auditorium.  Parents and friends are welcomed.  The first graders are the extra Native Americans in the play.  Then all the fourth graders, first graders and Mrs. Ross and Hernandez’s classes will come together in the gym for their traditional Thanksgiving feast which the parents cooked. The ROTC from Rahway High School will be the servers.  The parents decorate, cook, and clean up afterwards.  Without the parents the play and dinner would not happen each year.

HOLIDAY FOOD DRIVE

Pictured are students in their PJs packing boxes with food donated by our student body for our annual Holiday Food Drive, which ends November 24.  Students were urged to bring in food for the food drive, which entitled them to wear their PJs in school all day. Madison School collaborates with the Blue-Tri Club at the high school for the food drive. The holiday food baskets are distributed to families in need in the community.

MORE POWER!! FOR YOU!!

Recently, Madison Elementary School, in Rahway, held an assembly about drugs.  Tim Moss Productions presented “More Power!! For You!!  The program was a combination of audience participation, content repetition, magic, juggling and motivational storytelling which conveyed information about alcohol, nicotine marijuana and other drugs.  The assembly answered questions pertaining to the common myths about drugs, and gave suggestions on ways to feel good, increase self-esteem and have fun without drugs.  Pictured is Michaela Woolley with the assembly presenter.

Pictured are students from Mrs. Ross’ class who ran the “Mock Presidential Elections” at Madison Elementary School in Rahway.  The program is based on the New Jersey Student/Parent Mock Elections. The election took place on October 7.   The Union County Board of Elections provided the school with two voting machines and customized a ballot for the school.  Madison is a Pre K - 5th Grade school, and the ballot was very user friendly for the student base.  The goals of the mock election are to educate students on political candidates and issues, to give students an opportunity to cast a ballot as if participating in an actual election and to encourage student-parent discussions regarding the election.  In turn, there is hope for an increase in voter turnout on Election Day and future elections as the students become adults.

WATER, WATER EVERYWHERE

Pictured are students from Mrs. Bradley’s third grade class at Madison Elementary School in Rahway.  The students are investigating what happens to water when drops of water on a sloped surface flow downhill.  They also observed how changing the size of the water drops affects the flow.  They also observed that increasing their slope affects the speed of the flow.  The students set-up and conducted water dome races.  A water dome is simply a sloped surface.  The “Big Idea” of this experiment is to show students the steeper the slope, the faster the water will travel downhill due to gravity.   This investigation is part of the third grade science unit on “The Water Cycle.”

NEWTON'S LAWS LIVE-ON AT MADISON SCHOOL

Mrs. Shuster’s fifth graders at Madison Elementary School in Rahway launched their rockets last week during their science lab.  The rocket launch demonstrated Newton’s Third Law of Motion.  This activity was an extension of the science kit “Motion and Design.”  The students had to design, make and launch their rockets as part of the Science Unit.
