Madison School recently held a Winter Blanket Drive.  Madison’s goal was to collect 50 blankets in two weeks.  The blankets were donated to the Coalition for the Homeless in Elizabeth.  The students were happy to hear that 200 blankets were collected.  Anyone who brought in a blanket got a chance to “Hit the Principal in the Face with a Pie.”  Pictured is Ms. Gavin, the principal, with some of Madison’s students.

SOUND

Students in Mrs. Klein, Mrs. Ross, and Mr. Fagan’s classes met to explore the physics of sound, which is a FOSS kit for science.  The students were investigating what makes sound, how are sound waves connected to length and pitch, what role do vibrations play in sound, and what mediums does sound travel from one source to another.

As part of Madison School’s Social Studies curriculum, the second graders are learning about community life.  In order for the children to develop a better understanding of their community, they were assigned a project to build a model of one of the buildings found in Rahway.  Parental involvement was encouraged. Parents were asked to tour Rahway with their child to point out the different landmarks.  Each child selected a building and created a model using whatever materials were available to them.  They each wrote a brief description describing their building.  Their projects were presented to the class during American Education Week.

20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEAlibrary.JPG

Madison Elementary School which is located in the Rahway School district launched their annual book drive On October 13 with a visit from Superintendent Frank Buglione and media specialist, Debbie Geis.  This year’s theme is “20,000 Leagues under the Sea.”  Mr. Buglione would like students to read enough books to take him to the bottom of the ocean.  With his gear on he began his journey down to the depths of the ocean.

The question posed to all students, “Will he do it”?  Students know that their teachers along with their help will keep track of every book read, whether it is an AR book or not Ar.  A running count of books read per month will recorded.

The third, fourth and fifth graders were asked to do some research about what kinds of things the Superintendent will see as he journeys to the bottom of the ocean.
